The loan portfolio performance in the 1970s and 1980s was generally satisfactory. At the end of the financial year 31 March 1981 for example, only 3% of the portfolio had arrears in excess of three months and more, but by the end of December 1986 this proportion had increased to 10.5% indicating the early signs of portfolio deterioration.
